Madam, hope you spare some time to read this comment. Misuse of dowry laws has uprooted families of innocent husbands, destroyed their health, finances, jobs and compelled many to kill or get killed. The huge disparity in chargesheeting rate and conviction rate for every single year since Dowry Prohibition Act and s.498A IPC have been effective, gives ample testimony to the fact that the misuse is very high. If harassment for dowry is a crime committed upon a woman, how does she “settle” the crime by taking money. If a woman decides to file an FIR for crime of dowry and later decides to withdraw it by taking money, it clearly means that she had filed the FIR not to get justice but to get money. I am sure you are aware that the MHA has been compelled to issue not 1 nor 2 but 3 advisories on misuse of dowry laws in India. SC has labeled misuse of dowry laws as ‘Legal Terrorism’. Many NGOs in India exist to fight against misuse of dowry laws in India. The issue is not whether, why or how the dowry laws are misused, because India knows it. The issue is why Indian State is allowing women to make a failed marriage as a crime? We all know that the police and lawyers are thriving on the 498A industry. We all know that 498A is a weapon for women who are not physically or mentally fit for marriage; for women who have ego/temperamental issues; for women who are unable to adjust themselves with their husband and in-laws; for women with past affairs; for woman with extra-marital affairs; for women with no intention to stay married and with zero commitment towards marriage. We all know that women file dowry cases to recover money spent on marriages. We all know that women file dowry cases to finance their next marriage. We all know that dowry cases are filed even when the dispute between the warring couples has absolutely nothing to do with harassment for dowry. Therefore, Madam, please, for the sake of our motherland, do not say what is politically correct, say what is correct. Else, there may soon come a time when people would stop taking you and your work seriously.
