Maddy and I went for a short walk last night, our last one. She is all about the pack and I became part of hers a decade ago in her youth. Fiercely protective of my wife and kids, mischievous and so, so smart. Even in her last night, she met me at the door slowly wagging her tail and slept at the foot of the stairs leading to where the family sleeps, performing her traditional job of watching over us. The combination of disease and time has not been as kind to her as she deserves, so today will be her day. They say it is always better to be the one getting on the plane than being left behind at the airport. I hope so.
