His debut in Leeds on Saturday 5th April is part of a UK tour organised by La Linea Festival London with Arts Council Of England tour funding. Nephew of Brazilian funk/soul music legend Tim Maia, Ed grew up absorbing Brazilian music (MPB – Musica Popular Brasileira), American soul (Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire) and British rock (Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Free etc). His first musical job in the mid 1980s was as lead singer with hard rock band Kabbalah but his breakthrough came in 1988 with his own band Conexão Japeri, whose fusion of Brazilian pop, funk and soul gave them three huge hits – “Manuel”, “Baixo Rio” and “Vamos dançar” – which are considered MPB anthems even today and requsted by Brazilians at all Ed’s gigs worldwide. In 1990, Ed began his solo career with his debut album “Un Contrato Com Deus” (WEA), and has released another 12 albums for a variety of labels in the following years, covering his already established Brazilian funk/soul style plus film soundtracks and excursions into jazz. He has played with people like jazz legend Roy Ayers, UK jazz-funk star Bluey from Incognito, Japanese acid jazz band Mondo Grosso as well as superstars of Brazilian music such as Ed Lincoln, Marcos Valle, João Donato, Ivan Lins and Dom Salvador. One of Ed’s biggest fans in the UK is jazz/soul/global music DJ and record label owner Gilles Peterson. Ed recently appeared on the latter’s BBC 6 Music show playing tracks from his latest album “AOR” released in summer 2013 on the Dwitsa label. To quote Gilles…”Ed Motta is the Don” Ed Motta will be playing keyboards, guitar and singing backed by his regular band of Matti Klein (piano), Paulinho Guitarra (guitar), Miguel Casais (drums) and Hannes Huefken (bass). The set will be a mix of his Brazilian jazz-funk/soul hits of the past plus material from the latest LP.
