Madison Action for Mining Alternatives, working with other earth friendly groups around the state, seeks volunteers to go to your local county meeting of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress on Monday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. and introduce one or two resolutions to let the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources know what we think they ought to do about Act 1 (repeal ferrous mining law), the proposed Penokee open pit taconite mine (deny permits) and the ongoing devastation of frac sand mining (establish and enforce air monitoring to protect surrounding communities). If you are able to go to the meeting April 14, are willing to sit through a meeting and introduce one or more of these resolutions (one person can introduce two), and help us get them passed or at minimum get some conservation-minded citizens to think about what our DNR should be doing, please contact Carl Sack at [email protected] and give him your name, county, phone number, email address and which resolutions youre interested in. Well have a conference call a week from Saturday (April 12) at 3:00 p.m. to run over the process, but its very easy, you dont have to preregister or pay anything, just show up at your local site April 14 with two paper copies of the resolution and introduce it. This process was effective twenty years ago in helping to pass our current metallic mining moratorium bill, and it offers us the chance to send a message to the DNR while raising awareness of these issues. We need volunteers in about 18 counties now, but there are 55 more, including Barron, Brown, Buffalo, Burnett, Calumet, Clark, Columbia, Dodge, Douglas, Dunn, Florence, Fond du Lac, Forest, Grant, Green, Green Lake, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Juneau, Kenosha, Kewaunee, Lafayette, Langlade, Lincoln, Manitowoc, Marinette, Menominee, Monroe, Oconto, Ozaukee, Pepin, Pierce, Price, Racine, Rock, Rusk, St. Croix, Sauk, Sawyer, Shawano, Sheboygan, Taylor, Trempeleau, Walworth, Washburn, Washington, Waupaca, Waushara, Winnebago and Wood. We have some possible volunteers in some of these counties but it never hurts to have kindred spirits there with you. Thank you! Patricia (P.K.) Hammel, Madison Action for Mining Alternatives Let Carl know ([email protected]) if you are able to help us out!
