Madison loves treats. What Basset Hound doesnt? So I used her love of treats to get her to speak on command. But why would anyone want to do this? Why would you want to train a puppy to speak on command? Simply put, when you put a command to something they love to do, you can control that behavior later on. Also, by teaching a dog to Speak on command, you can also teach them how to be Quiet as well. I am using the word Click as a marker word. So every time Madison does something I like, I say Click and give her a reward. That reward can be food or a toy. Since I want her to bark when I say Speak! I say Click after she speaks, and I give her a treat. This way, she learns that speak means to bark.
