Madonna dellOrto in Cannaregio is an interesting mixture of architecture. It was built in 1350 as a church and monastery, but has been used as stables, a powder magazine, and a wine store. The church has undergone many restorations and has therefore known many styles. The intricate brickwork is perhaps the best example in Venice. This façade is Gothic in style, but the bell tower shows Byzantine influence. More importantly, this was Tintorettos favorite church. He lived on the nearby Fondamenta dei Mori and regularly attended services here. He and his family are buried here, and it contains more than a dozen paintings by him, including the magnificent The Last Judgment and Adoration of the Golden Calf, the most powerful Tintorettos Ive seen.
