Madras pulls away from Redmond Suppah, Stacona guide Buffs past Panthers Bulletin staff report / Published Dec 17, 2014 at 12:10AM REDMOND — With their top scorer drawing the undivided attention of the Redmond defense, the Madras White Buffaloes had to turn elsewhere for some offensive punch. They found it in Leah Suppah. The junior guard scored a game-high 17 points — including 15 on five 3-pointers in the decisive third quarter — to lead Madras to a 59-33 nonconference girls basketball victory Tuesday night at Redmond High. “She obviously was feeling it, so you’ve gotta let her shoot as long as she’s on,” said Madras coach Zach Lillebo. Behind Suppah, the White Buffaloes outscored the Panthers 27-4 in the third quarter to turn a 24-15 halftime lead into a comfortable 51-19 advantage. High-scoring Madras senior guard Mariah Stacona finished with 15 points and a team-best 10 assists. Her 12 points kept the Buffs on top in the first half. “I couldn’t be more proud of how we played the first half,” said Redmond coach Angela Capps. “I told the girls, this was like a chess match. We played defense for a long time (because) Madras was really patient on offense. But they seemed a little rattled because Mariah wasn’t doing much — well, she was; I don’t want to take anything away from her. But I thought we took a piece of their offense away and it was enough that the rest of the team didn’t quite know what to do. That allowed us to stay in the game.” Until Suppah got a hot shooting hand in the third quarter, that is. “Redmond did a fantastic job,” said Lillebo. “They didn’t take Mariah out of the game entirely, but they hounded her and made the other four girls beat them.” Kalan Wolfe added 11 points for Madras (2-1), and Rosebud Whipple, Lynden Harry and Janae Adams combined for another 13 points for the visitors. Senior post Chantel Dannis led the Panthers (1-4) with 10 points and seven rebounds. Maddie Edwards added nine points and six rebounds, and Sophia Hamilton scored eight points for Redmond. “Our girls, we’ve just got to learn how to win,” said Capps. “That’s a big piece for us. But I was really happy with how we played in the first half.”
