BRITISH AIRWAYS TOBAGO FOOTBALL LEGENDS CHALLENGE JUNE 15-22 PRESS RELEASE FOOTBALL FIRST FOR TOBAGO Tobago is to play host to some of the world’s best known football stars as an array of sporting greats visit the Island to compete in a new event in June next year. The British Airways Tobago Football Legends Challenge will take place in Tobago, between June 15th and 22nd 2015 and will see former football stars from top UK clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United face off along with select teams from the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) and a Caribbean All Stars side. “We are delighted to play host to such a prestigious sports challenge,” said Tracy Davidson-Celestine, Secretary for Tourism & Transportation. “This is a world class event and forms part of our strategy to raise the destination’s profile in key markets and position Tobago as a healthy, active, fun, naturally beautiful and unspoilt Caribbean Island. Some 300 additional international visitors are expected and we anticipate a capacity crowd filled with families and sports fans that will turn out to see their great sporting heroes in action. “Running a Legends event gives us an opportunity to show the world, what ‘Tobago Style’ hospitality is all about”. The Divisions of Tourism and Transportation, Education, Youth and Sports, will team up with the UK’s largest international scheduled airline British Airways, the PFA, which represents past and present professional footballers in the UK and a host of local supporters to bring the footballing greats to play on Island. Top UK broadcaster Sky Sports with a daily viewership of 2 million, will also air a 90 minute documentary on the Tobago event. Tobago’s own Premier League hero and current Global Brand Ambassador Dwight Yorke will lead a procession of world class talent in the Legends six-a-side tournament, which is expected to reignite old team rivalries among the legendary names competing in high quality games amid the sumptuous Tobago scenery. Eight top teams will feature in the Legends Challenge, with some 64 former top professional footballers battling for bragging rights. Yorke will be joined by past masters who will look to transfer their sporting skills in ‘Tobago Style’ come June. Trinidad and Tobago football fans and visitors will get a chance to see their sporting heroes close up and witness some seriously competitive sport as they battle it out for the winning trophy. “This will be great for Tobago and we can’t wait to get the challenge going,” said Yorke. “It’s been a while since I had a chance to strut my stuff back in Tobago and we will try to bring the trophy home for all my fans around our beautiful island and the world.” The football legends have also agreed to participate in a major community outreach programme, which will entail travelling the length and breadth of the Island working with local children. Schools, sports clubs and academies will benefit as some of the best young players in Tobago, will get a chance to try out in front of their heroes as the search for the next Tobago football star continues. Additionally, a star-studded golf day has been earmarked June 19th, 2015 to launch the 2016 Dwight Yorke International Golf Tournament. The community outreach programme will include the collaborative efforts with a range of partners to ensure a lasting legacy from the Legends Challenge. The sport for development component is an important element of the event,” said Secretary- Huey Cadette from the Division of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport. “This will help our youth benefit more fully from the opportunities that sports and football in particular can offer and help create genuine sustainable linkages with key international partners.” The British Airways Tobago Football Legends Challenge will help strengthen marketing and public relations awareness as the Island welcomes an increase in flights by the Caribbean’s leading carrier. ‘We are very excited to work with Tobago’ said Colm Lacy, Head of Gatwick Commercial, British Airways. “Bringing some of the world’s most legendary footballers to one of the world’s most beautiful islands is a match made in heaven”. “We look forward to flying fans in to Tobago, for what promises to be a fantastic tournament.
