Magnificent God- Thank You for the knowledge of Your presence. Thank You for the strength when I am weak. You are my firm foundation. In honor of Ash Wednesday and Lent I am giving up some things. First of all, fast food. While this may not seem like a big deal to some, for a single person on the go this can be a huge sacrifice. The problem is that I am really doing that for my health rather than for spiritual discipline. How about this…I am going to give up pride! Imagine a world where we all stopped wearing our feelings on our sleeves! What if we sought out humility instead? Instead of thinking about me and how wonderful I am, I am going to put others first! On that note, I am going to give up selfishness! I am going to adopt courtesy and care for others as my way of life for the next forty days! You go ahead of me in traffic; you have that last piece of bread. I am going to think of others rather than myself. Now we are on a roll! So I am going to add fear to the list! For the next forty days I am going to completely trust God and give up fear! I will no longer hesitate; I will no longer try to control. I am going to allow other people to be themselves and I will not judge. I will not panic and I will not cling tightly to things I might lose. Wouldn’t that be great! What if we all gave up pride, selfishness and fear for the next forty days? What if we did it for the next forty years? I will trust that God will remove those things from me whenever I can be useful to Him. I can ask that He help me put the needs of others ahead of my own. I will ask His help in keeping my attention on His presence rather than on what I think I need. Living for God is not a sacrifice; God brings joy and peace. Can I trust Him completely for the next forty seconds, the next forty minutes, the next forty hours and the next forty days? Remind me, Lord, that You ask so little of me yet You give so much. Help me to see the silliness in the things I cling to. I pray for those that lack faith; that they may see the love and sacrifice You gave for us. Amen.
