Magnum Photos brings its popular 5 day practical photographic workshop to Copenhagen, Denmark for the first time. Hosted in conjunction with the Copenhagen Photo Festival (5 - 15 June 2014) this workshop will focus on photographic practice and development led by two Magnum members; Olivia Arthur and Jacob Aue Sobol. Participants of the Magnum Workshop Copenhagen will work on self-directed projects relating to personal interests, guided by their Magnum tutor in a daily combination of shooting, editing, group critiques and sequencing. They will develop their confidence, visual language and photographic identity, as well as practical, technical and conceptual skills and the expertise required to compete in photography’s increasingly competitive marketplace. Participants will be encouraged to create new bodies of work, or develop existing projects, within the cultural hub of Copenhagen and the surrounding area. The workshop will culminate in a projection of participants work as part of the official festival programme, presented to both members of the public and Copenhagen’s photography professionals. As part of a special partnership with the British Journal of Photography, they will work with each Magnum tutor to identify a deserving workshop participant, who will enjoy a special online feature of their work accompanied by an interview. The two Magnum photographers have chosen the orientations for their respective workshops. Hello/Goodbye by Jacob Aue Sobol Our lives (and images) are a journey filled with encounters and goodbyes but it is also a journey within ourselves - a study of the undefinable and emotional states that we are often controlled by and which inspire and move us. The assignment Hello/Goodbye is an abstract visualization of the moments when we meet and part, when we see things for the first or last time, when we fall in love or leave (or are left behind). In those situations faces are associated with places, and the viewers own reality suddenly connects to the conditions that the images open up for. Tell me about your encounters and goodbyes in Copenhagen with people, places, objects and conditions. The ambition is to create images with a visual distinction attached to our personality - and with their intimate, human and presence character they must be filled by the states, where everything shimmers and where we are invited to both deal with our own existence and with what we are looking at specifically. It means everything that we can identify ourselves with our photos. They are a continuing study of our close relationship to the world and the camera is the instrument by which we attempt to bring order to understand our surroundings and place our self in the world today. Narrative sequence and the photographic book format by Olivia Arthur Photographs take us on journeys. They take us into worlds we don’t know or show us familiar ones from new perspectives. Individually photographs have the power to move, to share emotion, but as a sequence they start to take us on a journey, into a story. On this workshop we will focus on taking photographs that share the emotional perspective of the photographer and look at how to create personal narratives through sequencing. Starting with the stories you have already been working on, we will develop the narratives and push to bring out the personal voice in your work. Finally we will talk about the photographic book format and how to turn your stories and journeys, into a form that can be read and shared. Drawing on my experiences self-publishing and publishing the work of other photographers - through Fishbar with Philipp Ebeling - we will look at how finding the right form and edit for a body of work can transform the narrative an feeling of it. Copenhagen Photo Festival Copenhagen Photo Festival, Scandinavia’s largest photo festival heading into its fifth year, celebrates a wide range of photography across all genres from photojournalism and reportage through commercial to fine-art. The 2013 festival was a resounding success for everyone who participated: more than 300 Danish and international photographers were represented at more than 60 exhibitions. Event program in 2013 offered include the openings , debates, movie night at the Cinematheque , photo auction on Bruunrasmussen.dk and week for photo documentaries on DR K. Applicant number for the juried exhibition reached its peak with more than 4,000 submitted works in 36 different countries worldwide. The festival attracted about 50,000 active visitors by galleries, museums and exhibition venues in Copenhagen and the Øresund region. Candidates are actively encouraged to participate in the diverse schedule of the festival events. For information about the activities during Copenhagen Photo Festival, visit copenhagenphotofestival/ Requirements Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and a desire to learn. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. Each workshop is limited to 13 participants and photographers will be selected on the perceived benefit to their career and development. Photographers should prepare sufficient research relating to what they wish to shoot prior to arrival. A story list will be provided for inspiration; however candidates are expected to formulate realistic projects in the geography and time supplied. Magnum Photos will provide a suitable classroom infrastructure and participants will be responsible for their own time management. Due to the fast pace of the workshop Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be coordinated where required. Please note – all workshops will be conducted in English. Tuition fees 950€ plus VAT (does not include travel, accommodations or on the ground expenses) Upon submitting your online application you will be transferred to Google Checkout where you must submit a 100 € application fee. This will be applied to your tuition fee invoice if you are accepted onto the workshop. The fee will be fully refunded, minus 5€ for paypal services, if you are NOT accepted into the workshop. Applications without a fee will not be processed. Please note: Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 8 participants. Students will be given either a full refund or offered a place with an alternative photographer. In the event of a cancellation, students will be given at least 2 weeks advance notice. Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised. - If a participant decides to cancel for whatever reason, it must be confirmed in writing: . Magnum Photos will reimburse all the registration costs except for €100 administrative fee, if the participant informs Magnum Photos of cancellation at least 3 weeks before the first day of the workshop. Beyond this time limit, Magnum Photos will charge the following: . 50% of the cost if cancelled between 6 and 20 days before the workshop commences. . 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 5 days before the workshop commences. . All workshops that are commenced but not completed through the fault of either the contractor/or participant need to be paid in full. - Magnum Photos is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case a workshop is cancelled. We recommend that you buy refundable air tickets and/or travel insurance. Travel & Accommodation Participants are expected to make their own arrangements regarding travel and accommodation; a list of suitable accommodation options will be provided to successful candidates. Applications The deadline for acceptance is May 22th. Qualified applicants will be selected through a combination of the merit of their work and their personal statement, and the order of their applications receipt.
