Magnus Carlsens only true challenger will be perhaps his own elo success. As he approaches 2900 the amount of effort to keep his rating will increase exponentially. A draw against Magnus becomes worth a win in elo points. So GMs will find ways to force a draw with him, each draw will lose points. The pull on his elo will become irresistible and bring his elo crashing down. As did Kasparov after his 2851 elo record.
