Mahaffey on Movies: Big Hero 6 - The trailors cracked me up. The ratings were all pretty much positive. I started to fall asleep halfway through the movie. This animated offering from Walt Disney is billed as an action/adventure/comedy. Ill take their word for it. I was underwhelmed. Not only did the movie not live up to my expectations set by the trailor, virtually none of the scenes from the trailor appear in the film itself. I recognized only one voice and couldnt put a name to him. The plot is set in a city thats a futuristic mashup of Japan and San Francisco, unimaginatively named San Fransokyo. The story revolves around a group of college prodigys whose robot research takes a left turn resulting in the death of colleague. Big Hero 6 is not just a nod to the anime crowd, it is yet another blatant attempt by all of the studios to pander to the ravenous asian market. (If you cant tell that by the name of the city, then youll probably enjoy the movie after all.) Side note: I have been conditioned to wait patiently in my seat after a movie is over until all of the credits have rolled and the lights come up. Often, I am rewarded by an entertaining little ditty that tails onto the end of a story and even has the occasional easter egg. This was one of those times. SPOILER ALERT: For me it became the highlight of the movie. I hadnt realized that there was any tie-in to Marvel until I beheld an animated cameo by none other than Stan Lee! 10 seconds later, this segment too disappointed by descending into a conversation that celebrated the pleasures of soiled underwear. I didnt exactly feel Big Hero 6 was a waste of my time but in retrospect, I wish I had waited to see it on cable. This teacher gives Big Hero 6 a C+.
