Mahendra Kapoor, a synonyms for patriotic songs, made debut as a playback singer in V. Shantarams “Navrang” in 1958, singing “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi”. He always exhibited great values and was very level headed person. It is said that, he was offered the lead roles in “Navrang” and “Geet Gaya Pattharoo Ne” by Shantaram which he refused just because his parents didn’t want him to become an Actor. Since childhood he was an avid admirer of Mohd. Rafi, and later Rafi Saheb became his mentor. Kapoor’s full-bodied voice could convey both - the passion of patriotism and the ache of love. No Independence Day is celebrated without Mere desh ki dharti (Upkar) on the radio, on TV and blaring from the speakers in the colonies. His association with patriotic numbers began with “Mera rang de basanti” for Manoj Kumar’s Shaheed (1965). He always used to even begin his shows with a patriotic song. His chartbusters “Bharat Ka Rehnewala Hoon” from the movie Purab Aur Paschim has become an iconic song and a mandatory song to be played on days of national importance. In this song, in the lyrics of Indeevar and compostion of Kalyanji Anandji, he lists out the achievements of India, that have helped the world to progress. The song also discusses the values that India stands for and the lessons that the world can learn from India.
