Mahlers music spans the whole range of human emotion and describes the aspiration of the soul through the realms of nature into the larger cosmos. Suffering and torment are sometimes present, but at its best Mahlers music rises to peaks of joy, fulfillment, radiant love, and divine connection. Symphony 2 filled with celestial choirs. Assertiveness and power mingle with deep devotion and surrender in Mahlers great symphonies and songs. Suffering brings liberation and transcendence. His 8th symphony was composed for 1000 musicians reflecting the thunderous and power of the shabda, inner sound, which is not always sweet and delicate for those whove heard it. Leonard Bernstein was one of our musical treasures of the 20th century and one of the greatest conductors of all time. A rare talent that educated the general public on music, not just classical, jazz and even indigenous music. Such programs dont exist today. Nobody connected to Mahlers music more than Bernstein. It is said that while he was conducting one of Mahlers Symphonies Bernstein exclaimed I am Gustav Mahler I remember the day he passed away. He lived two towns from us and his fans mistook our telephone listing, Leon Bernstein, for Leon-ard Bernstein and so our phone rang off the hook with fans wanting to give their condolences. While nobody in our family inherented his musical genius (few have), dad is a dead ringer for Leonard. Same nose and hair. Mahlers Adagietto is one of his more excruciating tender moments.
