Mai bolted upright in a sitting position with her eyes wide and with beads of cold sweat running down her face. Her ample chest heaved and her heart thudded madly, as if she had just finished running a marathon. And then she began to tremble as the deep-seated fear that had seized her continued to envelop every fiber of her being. But as the seconds ticked by she gradually began to grow more aware of where she was, or more importantly, what state she was now in. Awake. Yes, that was a good thing. She was having another nightmare, but when she tried to remember what had transpired in her sleep, those images slipped away like a retreating wave on the beach, but even with the loss of her nightmares memory, it still left behind a harrowing sense of dread in its wake.
