Maid Cafes are all over Akiba. They are somewhat comparable to Hooters in America with a few major differences. You are not allowed to take photos inside, but I saw this on the street walking home and thought you might enjoy seeing what the dancing looks like. What is really fascinating is that the costumer in the white shirt dancing next to her totally knows all the correct moves! I have been to two different Maid Cafes with Michelle. Walk down the main street here and dozens of very attractive girls dressed as maids will politely offer you fliers to visit their cafe. There is a pricey cover charge per hour and when you walk in they greet you Welcome home, master. (Ahh, just like being at home...erm...) The menu features a lot of ultra over the top cute designed foods. Sort of like that time your mother made a smiley face out of your bacon and pancakes... but times a hundred. Geeks and nerds who are used to be shunned by cute girls get the royal treatment at these cafes. That is the primary draw... spend a little money to be treated like a King. When you order anything, you have to do a cute moe moe ritual... which can be a little embarrasing if you are, you know, my age. There is no tipping in Japan, so instead guys pay to have the girls perform a jpop idol dance (like in the video) or play simple games. Then for about $5 you can get a Polaroid photo with your favorite maid. She will use pink and blue markers to scribble cutesy stuff all over it. Collecting photos is a hobby of a lot of the Otaku here in Akiba. I saw several people with BINDERS full (yes, that was plural.) I met a British Otaku the other night who had a small single binder with $240+ worth of photos from just 2 weeks worth of visits. I cannot imagine how much those others guys must have spent. In case you have been wondering, these cafes are rated PG and it is look but do not touch. I met a Japanese police officer who said he came to the maid cafes 3 times a week. The cafes are not really my thing.. but the whole culture around it is sure interesting to observe!
