Maintenance of a very profitable status quo is driving (1) the efforts toward surveillance of U.S. citizens by an agency that is supposed to be focusing on external threats to national security, (2) the militarization of domestic police forces, and (3) the jailing of peaceful activists whose only "crime" is the attempt to exercise their constitutional rights to speech and assembly. Those who are profiting—in these times when so many are suffering—fear dissenters, want to spy on all Americans in order to locate the dissenters among us, and would like for all dissenters to be thought of as "terrorists," because widespread dissent has the potential to create real change which could reduce profits.
