Major change is something that makes local history a lot more than a recitation of town officials and prominent clergy. Cataclysmic change is one thing, and usually an act of God is pretty unmistakable when it happens. Economic and social change happens slower and usually isnt perceptible when it is going on. In this essay, John Conway, Sullivan County (NY) Historian, analyzes the end of the Golden Age of the resort industry in Sullivan County and comes up with interesting conclusions, not only about what caused the change, but when it actually was perceptible. Worth reading!
