Makarevich is one of the musical/poetic icons of my generation. Last time we met actually in Kyiv, some time between 92 and 94. I do not think his life was lived in vain, but his frustration is shared by many of the true Russian intellectuals, at risks and simple honest people. Sergei Yurskiys letter posted a bit later shares his viewpoint. I had a friend in Moscow, a true art world person, my Moms age. Even in the late 70s-early 80s disrespect to Ukraine and Ukrainians was palpable, and I had personal experience with that at the University in Moscow ow where I was a student. By the way, being a Russian speaker from Ukraine did not change a thing for the better for the Moscovites. So, this friend of mine always told me that to respect oneself one needs to first respect other: for her, respecting Ukraine Andrew recognizing its true value went without saying or even thinking. It has always been a natural thing to do.
