Make no mistake, Tea Party Republicans are trying to roll back the clock to the 19th and 20th Centuries by coming up with bogus and fraudulent arguments about imagined voter fraud. In fact, Greg Abbott, as gone so far as to outright lie, about people being denied the vote under the current voter system of having to produce ridiculous amounts of identification to vote. According to an Express News report, by Neal Morton, Abbott claims that no one has been denied the vote because of these draconian voter measures of having to produce excessive ID documentation. Abbott told the Express News, “You would think after years of being able to litigate this issue, the opponents of voter ID would have been able to find at least one person – who could have testified that they were prohibited from voting.” LAIR, LIAR, pants and gasp on fire! Hold on Mr. Abbott, according to federal court transcripts, in the case of Veasey v. Perry, which was heard in Corpus Christi a few weeks back, local African American activist Gordon Benjamin testified under oath in federal court that he was denied the vote under this system of voter suppression. We have more than one victim for sure, and so Abbott’s legal claptrap is but pure cock-and-bull snake oil. Greg Abbott is a shameless liar, and Calvert hits it on the head when he said, “Greg Abbott wants to go back to the good old days. You remember when Black and Hispanic voters were forced to pay a poll tax. Right now, Tea Party Republican Greg Abbott is in court to make you pay $16-$25 dollars in order to vote.” Let’s get to the polls this week for the early vote, and on election day. Remember, we can early vote from now until October 31, and yes we can vote on “Freedom Sunday” after church in a “Pews to the Polls Movement,” on October 26th after 12 noon, at the Claude Black Center. Election Day is Tuesday, November 4, 2014, but why wait—let’s do this! Let’s roll!
