Make no mistake that veterinary services are a HUGE business. In Alabama, vet owners have tried everything to oppose Dr. Margaret Ferrell who has advocated for low cost spay-neuter surgeries in the state to help reduce overpopulation. Making these services accessible is the most impactful way to reduce canine suffering, yet selfish vets consider it radical and communist. In New Orleans, you may be surprised to learn how many vets are unwilling to support rescues, how many will immediately euthanize a dog if its family doesnt want to pay for services, and how many would advocate for the preposterous positions described in the article. Vets are private businesses of course, and we are not looking to criticize individual practices. Rather, we encourage our supporters to look for vets with strong ties to the rescue community. They are typically the most compassionate around, and extremely knowledgeable from treating so many health issues common to neglected dogs. In particular, we recommend ARK Animal Hospital and Southern Animal Foundation . (This is based on our experience and not to say no other vets in the area are rescue-friendly.) In our opinion, provision of low-cost spay and neuter services, and advocacy for individual dogs in need who enter the clinic, are the highest degree of professionalism.
