Make no mistake, this is a tragedy. But this tragedy could easily have been avoided if authorities had heeded the countless warnings from elephant experts prior to green lighting this facility. Hope Elephants drew criticism from animal rights activists across the nation, who understood that Lauritas experience exploiting elephants for entertainment from decades ago and his subsequent veterinary work with dogs and cats did not qualify him for this type of venture with elephants. ARM wrote letters and answered many questions in 2011 about why Hope Elephants was an unsafe and inhumane idea. This tragedy could have been avoided. These elephants deserve to live out their lives at a true sanctuary, with healthy herds that satiate their emotional needs, enough room to thrive, and in a climate conducive to their needs...not to continue on as spectacles for human entertainment in Maine.
