Make sure you come to this RATB event on 26 June! https://facebook/events/124621501079330 How the fight against austerity in Latin America became a struggle for socialism Public meeting Wednesday 26 June 2013, 7.30pm @ Apple Tree Pub, 45 Mount Pleasant, Clerkenwell, London WC1X 0AE. Tube: Chancery Lane. Bus: 341, 19, 38 During the 1980s, as a result of neo-liberal austerity programmes, the number of Latin Americans living in poverty increased from 136 million to 200 million (48.3%). In the 1990s, $100 billion worth of Latin American state assets were sold off to domestic investors and foreign corporations. In response to this plunder and impoverishment, mass movements rose up against cuts and privatisations, forcing corporations and governments to back down. They demanded political representation and economic, social and cultural justice. In Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador social movements joined political activists to create new governments which represent the interests of workers, indigenous communities and the poor. These governments have opposed outside economic and political intervention and forged fraternal trade and development links with socialist Cuba. Join us to discuss this important peoples’ history and analyse events in Latin America, where the fight for socialism is now back on the agenda. Organised by Rock around the Blockade, a campaign of the Revolutionary Communist Group. ratb.org.uk / frfi.co.uk
