Makivik Corporation 9 hrs · Press Release: The Nunavik Inuit Mining Policy Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, November 24, 2014 ─ During various events organized this week and last week for mayors of Nunavik’s northern villages, presidents of Nunavik’s landholding corporations and mining industry stakeholders, the Makivik Corporation announced the release of the Nunavik Inuit Mining Policy. “Makivik has developed this policy to better monitor and guide mining projects in the region,” stated Jobie Tukkiapik, President of the Makivik Corporation. “The policy aims to maximize social and economic benefits for Nunavik Inuit, and minimize negative environmental impacts. It’s a policy Inuit can be proud of.” The need for a mining policy was an issue raised in every community during Parnasimautik consultations carried out in 2013 to identify a comprehensive vision for regional development. The Nunavik Inuit Mining Policy clearly sets out the conditions for mineral resource development in Nunavik. Highlights: • Mineral exploration and mining activity generates jobs, training, business and investment opportunities. The mining policy insists that Nunavik Inuit obtain maximum benefits. • The mining policy insists that mineral exploration and mining activity be carried out in a responsible manner that is sensitive to the Inuit way of life and minimizes in all ways possible negative cultural, social and environmental impacts. Unavoidable impacts will have to be managed or mitigated so as to reduce, to the greatest extent possible, effects on the environment and Nunavik Inuit. • Politically, culturally and economically, the Makivik Corporation has been a leader for more than 35 years in building and developing a vibrant Nunavik region. With regards to mining and Inuit rights, the Makivik Corporation will be the point of entry for all mining development. • The Nunavik Inuit Mining Policy recognizes that mineral exploration and mining in Nunavik must be built on a relationship of trust among all stakeholders, including Nunavik Inuit, their communities, the Makivik Corporation, the Québec government and mining companies. Stakeholders must be kept fully informed about all issues based on solid communication processes and mining companies must be assured of political and social stability. The Nunavik Inuit Mining Policy goes hand-in-hand with the Parnasimautik Consultation Report released earlier this month. The consultation report presents feedback provided by the communities as a blueprint for the future of Nunavik Inuit, families and communities, as well as for the renewal of the region’s relationship with its regional organizations as well as the federal and provincial governments. Parnasimautik is an unprecedented exercise in regional and local mobilization and unity. The process is moreover a critical step on the pathway to a new autonomous governance structure for Nunavik.
