Makkah municipal cleaners went back to work on Sunday after a week-long strike. The strike was called off following an agreement with the authorities to correct their legal status. Addressing a press conference in on Sunday, Mayor Osama Al-Bar said: “The municipality will renew 200 iqamas every day until the legal status of all the 3,500 workers is corrected.” The workers had stopped working fearing arrests during the labor inspection raids, he said. “The strike had nothing to do with claims of no-pay as the workers received their monthly pay for last month as scheduled,” said Al-Bar. Meanwhile garbage remained piled up in the streets. Tons of more garbage accumulated in the streets on Sunday despite the fact that the Jeddah Municipality has sent reinforcements of cleaners. Citizens were seen in several areas cleaning up streets in a show of responsibility toward their city. The Municipal Council has held several meetings with the company responsible for keeping the city clean. Earlier, Abdulmuhsin Al-Alsheikh, president of the Makkah Municipal Council, said the council was coordinating with the municipality and company officials to end the crisis.
