Malawi Nurses and Midwives to go on strike today: DPP implicated in the saga The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) has announced that starting from Monday, nurses are starting a national wide strike to force government to implement a February joyce banda presidential directive. In February this year, President Joyce Banda made a directive on the conversion of Nurses Midwifery Technicians to Professional Diploma registered nurses and midwifery. In a statement signed by NONM President Jonathan Abraham Gama and Executive Director Harriet Kapyepye, the body said this follows their earlier communication to the authorities that there are some forces which are there to frustrate them by dilly-dallying in rolling out the program. “The strike, which will see nurses and midwives assemble at their working places, will last as long as our calls are not heard,” reads the release. In a separate letter which the body has sent to President Banda, the body has demanded that the board chair of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi and its Registrar be removed, the entire board be dissolved and Director of Nursing in the Ministry of Health Mrs Sheilla Bandazi be transferred. “The nurses through their body NONM feels that the council is deliberately failing to comply with the president’s directive hence the demand to have it dissolved,” reads part of the release. And commenting on the same, NONM member Mvula pushed the blame to politicians for interfering with the whole process and single handedly isolated Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He wrote , the problem is that nurses council thinks the DPP will come back . They are deliberately frustrating joyce banda directive because they think more nurse technicians and midwives will vote for Joyce Banda in appreciation of the conversion. Most board members of the nurses council has been given money by Peter muntharika to bloke the whole process. What the DPP must know is that The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) is bigger than them . We can decampaign them if we want . If you remember in 2009 we played a greater role in order for bingu to win. We distributed party cloth among nurss then . If DPP continues to block us, we will use the same strategy to campaign for joyce banda and decampaign Peter muntharika . What can stop us from ordering all nurses to vote for joyce banda ? he wondered Mvula then called on all nurse midwives technicians to treat the democratic progressive party as the invincible hand blocking the process We are very disappointed with the DPP invincible hand that is geared to frustrate nurses in this country. After all the support we offered DPP in 2009 , we never expected them to oppress us like this. We nurses are very angry with the DPP leadership interference in this whole process . 2014 is just arround the corner, we shall see he warned
