Malaysia is well known for her knee-jerk and short-sighted - TopicsExpress

Malaysia is well known for her knee-jerk and short-sighted reactions which she calls solutions. Needless to say, these solutions do not work and often, they are laughable and ludicrous. Take for example the proposed solution to drivers using their mobile phones while driving some years ago. It was suggested that a law be passed to require both hands to be on the steering wheel. So I suppose drivers of manual car cant change gear then. Simply brilliant. Einstein would be impressed. I suppose one of these days some bright spark from within our Government - most probably PEMANDU - would suggest that Malaysian astronauts should go to the sun at night. Which brings me to the topic of the moment, namely, the banning of soup kitchen within 2km radius KL city centre. (thestar.my/News/Nation/2014/07/03/Soup-kitchens-banned-around-KL-city-centre/) What a brilliant idea. This activity just encourages people to remain homeless and jobless. There have been many such people whom we have found jobs for, who returned to that life because they said it is easier......We already have all kinds of garbage-related problems in the city and spend more than RM90mil a year collecting it. I do not see my actions as harsh but necessary in order to create a disciplined society. That was what was reported of him saying. Later it was reported that he threatened to fine all soup kitchen which operate in KL after the expiry of a deadline. The problems of homelessness, jobless people, vagrancy and beggars are not caused by soup kitchens and/or the generosity of the public. Getting rid of soup kitchens and preventing the public from giving their money to beggars is not going to solve those problems. Those problems are caused by many elements. Human trafficking; child abuse; economics imbalances; high cost of living; syndicated begging; kidnapping; human slavery; refugees and stateless people - these are the insidious and underlying elements which result in homelessness, vagrancy and begging. Banning soup kitchens is not going to solve these problems. The solution to these problems require co-operations between the police, immigration, welfare department and various other agencies. Stop the soup kitchens in KL and what would happen? They would just move to PJ or to places in KL which is beyond the 2km radius. So is the problem solved?
