Malaysia will arrest and charge its citizens for joining ISIS/ISIL in Syria and Iraq KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — The group of Malaysians known to be involved in the Islamic State (IS) militant group in the Middle East will be arrested once they step foot in the country, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has said. Wan Junaidi described the roughly 20 Malaysian men as “misguided”, pointing out that taking up of arms was not sanctioned by any local religious edict and adding that the IS militants’ terror activities are unIslamic. “They claimed to be jihadists who fight in the name of religion, but a jihad can only be called by a national fatwa and what IS is doing is just an act of terrorism, which is not an Islamic thing to do,” he was quoted saying yesterday (Friday) by the New Straits Times (NST). He reaffirmed Malaysia’s refusal to be a “sanctuary for the extremists” and firm stand against “any act of terrorism in the name of Islam”. Home Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi similarly said that Putrajaya is firmly against IS, saying that authorities are probing reports of Malaysians joining the militant group. “The government would like to stress that we don’t endorse IS and we are not a hub for terrorism. Our stand against this matter is firm,” he was quoted saying in the same NST report today (Saturday). When asked whether his ministry’s Immigration Department would bar Malaysians from travelling to Syria and Iraq where IS is centred, Zahid pointed out that those suspected of these militant activities would use indirect routes such as Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand before landing in those countries. - See more at: themalaymailonline/malaysia/article/malaysians-who-join-un-islamic-is-will-be-nabbed-on-return-says-deputy-home#sthash.V9bfqboA.dpuf
