Malcolm X Speaks! TODAY at 2pm, Ropewalks Square, Liverpool As part of Writing on the Wall - there will be a special FREE event in Liverpool city centre: This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Malcolm X’s famous Ballot of the Bullet speech. To his admirers, this African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist was a courageous advocate for the rights of Black Americans, a man who indicted White Capitalist America in the harshest terms for its crimes against Black Americans; detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. Writing on the Wall will be hosting an event to celebrate Malcolm’s legacy with Shakespearian Actor, Elliot Barnes -Worrell reenacting clips from Malcolm’s most iconic speeches where he asserted the need for Black Americans to fight for civil rights as well as charting the political development and changed attitude of Malcolm’s views and reasoning throughout his career. We will also have a special appearance from DJ Jaylyn all the way from New York City who will be hosting the event and playing tunes inspired by Malcolm! Acting as Malcolm is Elliot Barnes-Worrell is currently touring with the Royal Shakespeare Company performing in Richard II, directed by Gregory Doran, for which he has been nominated for The Ian Charleson award. And we have a selection of books about Malcolm X and the Civil Rights Movement for sale here in the shop.
