Maleficent. The movie is a fantasy … the tale of Sleeping - TopicsExpress

Maleficent. The movie is a fantasy … the tale of Sleeping Beauty, the doomed & innocent heroine of Grimm’s Fairy tales, although it easily qualifies as a horror film – but an altogether different kind than we are use to. Could be a new breed of horror movie whereby evil once so plain in sight is not so easily apparent but rather abandoned to the distinct possibility that perhaps – just perhaps there is something more evil than the sorceress in the fairy tale our parents once read to us in a dimly lit room. A cunningly affective blend of cinematography, special effects & childhood nostalgia & incredible casting & direction. I saw it today. In the dark. Alone. From opening scene to finality, I savoured the sound of the words & the tug from reality into childhood fairy tales. Angelina Jolie has the lead in this film & is allowed to use her greatest gift – not her beauty which is ethereal & beyond the stuff of mere mortals, but rather her magnificently controlled voice – more poetically poignant & menacing than anything she has done in years. There is a distinct possibility that there can be redemption without condemnation. That things need not end in disaster & that maybe man has a hand in his own demise after all. Kudos to the adaptation of this stunningly superior childhood fantasy with strong characters, plotting & direction that never fails to capture & keep the audience’s interest & attention from start to finish. With unabashed romancticism of its evil queen, this movie, Maleficent is a modern day horror film with polish, sophistication & elegance. PMercer2014
