Malik Muhammad Ashiq Naqqash decorating a camel skin-ware delicately. Multan has many traditions which go back to the bronze age. Rich in archeology and history, the city has lot to offer for those in search of culture. But, more than anything else, its the monuments and handicrafts which give the region a glory of its own. The people of this area have been using KUPPAS (containers) made of camel skin for containing oil and ghee for centuries. Which were used painted and unpainted for long time. We are not sure when leather work and tanning started in Multan, the origins of such crafts are always unknown and their inventors remain anonymous. Today the making of artifacts from camel skin is one of the most famous and lucrative crafts of Multan. It appears that the introduction of machinery and hand-made objects, lessen the use of traditional utilitarian objects of hide and skin and thus the craftsmen woking on hides and skins gradually changed course to compensate their skills to create new and delicately decorative objects such as the camel skin artifacts. Thus one can easily and safely guess that the present artifacts like camel skin-wares of multan came ino being sometime during 20th century.
