Mame Tierno’s lineage constitutes an important subgroup within the Murid order and Darou Mousty is an important Murid sanctuary. With approximately 15 000 inhabitants, it is considered the “second city” of the Murids. It is the administrative seat of a “rural community” which extends to the daaras of its hinterland. Mame Tierno Birahim had successfully maintained the autonomy of Darou Mousty, not just from the colonial administration (which was happy enough to let this peaceful breadbasket alone), but from the khalif in Touba. Still today the district lies in Louga Region, not in Diourbel with Touba.
