Mammal Monday! The Coyote (Canis latrans), meaning barking dog, - TopicsExpress

Mammal Monday! The Coyote (Canis latrans), meaning barking dog, was first described for scientific purposes in 1823 by Thomas Say. Early European explorers, Lewis and Clark, referred to them as prairie wolves. In 1805, they described the behaviors of coyotes as such: the small woolf or burrowing dog of the praries are the inhabitants almost invariably of the open plains; they usually ascociate in bands of ten or twelve sometimes more and burrow near some pass or place much frequented by game... Today, because of their remarkable ability to adapt, they have a flourishing population throughout North America. Here in the Park, they are often seen in prairie dog towns moving furtively in search of their next meal. (dm) Photo credit: Dakota McCoy
