MEDIA RELEASE: Columbus Police are investigating a police involved shooting on the city’s west side. On January 5, 2015, officers from the Community Response Team were in the area of Martha Avenue and Union Avenue working a crime pattern advisory (CPA) involving stolen vehicles on the Hilltop. A plain clothes officer and uniformed officer working the CPA, noticed an unoccupied stolen van parked in the area. The officers maintained surveillance on the vehicle and later observed a man, identified as 18-year-old Rondale Johnson, drive up to the van in a stolen pickup truck at approximately 9:28am. Rondale Johnson exited the truck and got into the van as the uniformed officer pulled up to the van in a marked cruiser. The officer exited the cruiser and attempted to take him into custody when Johnson drove the van at the officer. The officer fired his weapon, striking the van multiple times. Johnson fled the area in the van and crashed a short distance from the shooting scene. He was taken into custody and transported to Mount Carmel West Hospital where he is listed in stable condition with injuries to his head. It is unknown if Rondale Johnson’s injuries are the result of the shooting or of the crash. No other injuries were reported. Rondale Johnson is charged with two felony counts of Receiving Stolen Property. Additional charges are anticipated pending further investigation. This is the first police involved shooting for 2015.
