Southampton were above City in the standings ahead of the tie, but the result saw the Sky Blues overtake their hosts to claim second position. The Saints had a great opportunity to take the early lead. Pelle lofted a pass forward for Schneiderlin but he could only get a touch before Joe Hart blocked the ball. Davis then pounced on the ball and shot but was denied by Harts one-handed save. At the other end of the pitch, City came close as well. Jovetic broke on the left flank and unleashed a first-time shot. The attempt got through Ben Foster and looked set to find the back of the net but Davis made a last-minute block to prevent it. The deadlock was broken in the 51st minute as the visitors opened the scoring. Sergio Aguero drew out several defenders to make room for Yaya Toure on the edge of the area. The Argentine teed it up for the midfielder who thundered home a low shot after a slight deflection. City came close again when James Milners corner kick was flicked on by Vincent Kompany but Managala couldnt bury it and Aguero eventually shot over from five yarrds out. Southampton were given a chance to get themselves back in the game in the 74th minute as City were reduced to 10 men. A mistake by Toure put City under pressure, resulting in Managala taking out Shane Long and earning a second yellow card. However, the second goal came in the 80th minute and it was the visitors who pulled away. The Saints pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were dispossessed. Milner made room on the left to cross for Frank Lampard who hit home a low shot past Foster. The result was put to bed in the 88th minute as 10-man City netted their third of the game. Lampard found Aguero on the left and the Argentine squared it for Gael Clichy to rifle home his first goal for the club. 51’ Yaya Touré 80’ Frank Lampard 88’ Gaël Clichy
