Man... My mom, Sally Bouwman, didnt have a 9 to 5, 5 days a week. As a teacher, she was on all day, every day. Those kids werent just her students -- they were her babies (still are -- even the grown ones!). And she worked extra jobs SO SHE COULD AFFORD TO TEACH THEM. I wonder if parents knew that on evenings and weekends their kids teacher was talking about how much she loves that kid, wondering what to do to make their life better. The most frustrating ones inspired my mom to greater degrees of commitment and she always looked for their awesomest aspects -- which were sometimes still the frustrating bits (because if you know my mom you know shes kind of a naughty 7 year old herself). Though my mom has left the school system, I also know that just like on evenings, weekends and vacations, she is still a Teacher, remembering and loving the hundreds of kids and families that passed through her classroom and scooping up new ones to love along the way.
