Man accused of beating women with hammer in court A 36-year-old Hartford man accused of hitting two women several times in the head with a hammer has entered a not guilty plea by reason of mental disease or defect, but during a hearing Thursday the plea could not be established by proof. Christopher Small appeared in custody before Washington County Circuit Judge Andrew Gonring with attorney Gary Schmaus. The results of a court-ordered exam were reviewed during Thursday’s hearing. Small didn’t challenge the finding that the so-called insanity plea could not be established by proof. Small’s next hearing is at 8:15 a.m. July 29 for an arraignment.
