Man its a peculiar feeling when people put words in your mouth or twist what youre saying to invalidate you. I just got ripped into by some christians for calling bullshit on their blame based theology on suicide. Apparently my saying that suicide is an end result of mental illness is removing all hope from depressed people. Hmm. First off, suicide is just one of many outcomes of mental illness. Not the only outcome. Secondly, treating it as a serious illness, I would think would be beneficial for folks suffering from it so that they know they need to get help for it. There is ALWAYS hope. On the flip side, I would strongly argue that invalidating the seriousness of the illness and saying its 100% a choice to commit suicide and that someone who does is somehow supremely selfish, is doing massive harm and disservice to those suffering depression. Not to mention disrespectful towards family and friends of a suicide victim. Honestly, the ignorance around depression right now is rather overwhelming...
