Man-made snow gave skiers a white Christmas CHARLEMONT, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s really no mystery why skiers were sparse on the slopes of the Berkshire East ski area in Franklin County: people aren’t seeing any snow in their own backyard, and no white christmas keeps skiers home. “They just seem to think we don’t have it, but we do,” Kathy Kilhart, a ski instructor told 22News. “Berkshire East has a great snowmaking system.” Snowmaking made for winter conditions on the slopes in Franklin County for the few skiers who showed up like Christopher Lawless of Charlemont, who came despite the lack of snow. He’s been skiing since before his third birthday. He said “Conditions are pretty good considering we’ve had lots of days with rain.” And Greenfield skier Cherry Knight told 22News that, in this digital age, skiers can go online to get an update on conditions and open terrain at their preferred ski areas. She added “They should just look at their website and It’ll tell you how many trails are open.” A Berkshire East spokesman told 22News they’re expecting a big weekend. He believes that many of their regular skiers needed Friday to return home from their Christmas holiday. Berkshire East is located in the Franklin County town of Charlemont.
