Manase Report: released following pressure from the DA 24 July 2013 Release: immediate The Democratic Alliance proved how effective it is as an opposition party yesterday when it successfully forced the ANC into finally releasing the long-awaited Manase report. For the past 16 months, the ANC leadership in various structures in the province has refused to release this document despite numerous promises to the media and public at large. Court cases brought towards the ANC for the release of this report still failed to convince the ruling party into making it public but continued pressure and unrelenting persistence from the DA finally resulted in the ANC caving in yesterday and this report is now in the public domain. The release of this report – which details how more than R500 million of public funds were squandered by municipal officials and ANC cadres in eThekwini – is a victory not just for the DA; but the greater public at large. The ANC must hang their heads in shame for the manner in which they have conducted themselves in this matter over the past year-and-a-half. The fact that they kept this report a secret for 16 months and only released it following pressure from the DA shows that they do not put the interests of the public first. As it stands, the DA’s legal team is studying the contents of this voluminous 7 000 page document and the party will report back to the public going forward about its contents and the necessary steps it will take to ensure full accountability for those implicated.
