Manchester United Reportedly Exploring Possibility of New Rear Shirt Sponsor Manchester United have led the way in the Premier League when it comes to commercial operations over the last few years, seemingly acquiring new corporate partners every few months. Now, according to the Times, the 20-time English champions want to have a rear shirt sponsor as well. The Old Trafford club has just begun a new shirt sponsorship with Chevrolet worth more than £50m annually, while a new contract with Adidas, worth a staggering £750m over the next decade, will kick in next summer. The American owned club was also the first Premier League to have a separate training kit sponsor after joining forces with DHL in 2011, while the training ground was recently renamed the AON Training Complex after another corporate agreement. United are now reportedly exploring further options to maximise revenue in the age of Financial Fair Play and are looking to be the first Premier League club to have an additional sponsor on the back of the shirt. Under current Premier League rules, sponsors on the backs of shirts are prohibited, although they are permitted in the FA Cup and in the Football League. But United have allegedly raised the issue at a Premier League meeting, although it is believed that the other 19 clubs were generally opposed to the idea. The main point of opposition is suggested to be a wish to preserve some class and prevent English football from heading in the same direction as sports like Formula One, where cars and uniforms are plastered with various sponsors. There is also a concern that having any more than one sponsor on a single shirt would reduce the impact of the main sponsor on the front of the shirt. But despite the knockback, United are not giving up and sources at two Premier League clubs are said to believe the issue has not been put to bed and will re-surface in the near future.
