Manchester United and Liverpool appear to have missed out on landing Croatian superstar Ivan Rakitic. Spanish giants FC Barcelona have confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Sevilla for the signing of 26-year-old Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic. Premier League giants Manchester United and Liverpool have been tracking the versatile midfielder who had a stellar season in La Liga last term, but will now have to look at other plausible options to strengthen their respective midfields. Both the English giants are known to be keen on world- class midfield reinforcements in order to revamp their style of play, and the hard working and earnest Rakitic would have fit the bill perfectly. The former Schalke 04 man netted 15 goals for Sevilla last season, and also skippered the side to European glory by winning the Europa League. His leadership qualities too may have interested the Reds, whose skipper Steven Gerrard may not have too much football left in him. It will be interesting to see how Liverpool and United respond to this development, and who the two sides will now turn to in order bolster their side for big challenges next season.
