The club was founded in 1878 and was originally called Newton Heath F.C. The clubs two most successful managers have been Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson. In the 1950s the side was nicknamed the Busby Babes after Sir Matt led them to back- to-back titles. Tragedy struck in 1958 when, following a European tie, the team was involved in a plane crash at Munich Airport. Eight players lost their lives in the event and amongst others manager Matt Busby suffered serious injuries. After recovering, the manager was able to rebuild a team which included the likes of Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best. Just 10 years on from the disaster Manchester United won the European Cup. After years without a league title, Alex Ferguson took charge of the club in 1986. In 1990 he won his first major trophy, the FA Cup. The club went on to dominate the English game for the next two decades. During the period Ferguson won 13 league titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 Champions Leagues. The legendary manager retired in 2013 after 27 years in charge.
