Manchester United will have another Brazilian if midfielder gets what he wants Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira has admitted he wants to play for Brazil despite having played for Belgium’s youth teams throughout his career so far. The 18-year-old is Belgian born but has Brazilian parents meaning that, like Adnan Januzaj, he has the opportunity to choose what international side he wants to pledge his allegiance to. Pereira is one of United’s best prospects in the academy and speaking to Brazil’s Esporte Interativo, the midfielder intimated that there is only one country he wants to play for. “My heart is Brazilian,” he said. “My dream is to play there in the national team. I played for Belgium at youth level it but does not have the feeling that I imagine you get playing for Brazil. It’s different.” It is good to hear that Pereira is ambitious but it is going to be incredibly tough for him to break into Brazil’s national side having not represented them at any youth level but if he continues to progress as he has done so far at United, he can certainly become one of Europe’s finest midfielders. He was rewarded for his hard work last season by being given the captain’s armband at this year’s 2013 Milk Cup and was named player of the tournament with three goals to his name as United romped to victory in emphatic style. An adventurous and diminutive player, Pereira has the natural ability with the ball and given that he looks up to Ryan Giggs as his idol at Old Trafford, the early signs suggest Pereira has got what it takes. He continued: “I am an attacking midfielder, a # 10 midfielder. I like to dribble, score goals, make assists. I really like to score (…) too. What I usually compare and really like is Kaka when he played in Milan earlier.” He is certainly a confident player and any youngster needs that sort of attitude to succeed in the professional game. Like Januzaj with the Under-21s last year, Pereira looked a cut above his peers with the Under-18s and he will likely get some more opportunities with Warren Joyce’s side as the season progresses. But one thing Pereira should make sure he doesn’t do is ostracise himself from Belgium to try and force his way into Brazil’s national side. >AM
