Mandatory Ebola Quarantine Doesnt Apply to all US Troops Thursday, 13 Nov 2014 08:55 PM By Jason Devaney Some U.S. soldiers departing western Africa for emergency leave can skip the militarys 21-day quarantine for the Ebola virus, it was revealed Thursday. On a case-by-case basis, troops may be allowed to bypass the strict standards put in place to control the outbreak that has killed more than 3,000 people on the African continent, reports Military. We do a risk assessment of every soldier, the approval authority for any soldier to leave theater is held at the Joint Forces headquarters, said Gen. Gary Volesky, commander of the 101st Airborne Division, via video conference from Liberia on Thursday. If we look at that and say his risk or her risk is higher, we may say that they have to go through a controlled monitory. Three soldiers sent to Liberia have returned to the U.S. for emergency leave, according to the military report. All three were determined to pose a low risk because they had only spent a week in the country. The trio, however, is monitoring themselves for the virus anyway. Our chain of command knows exactly who those soldiers are, Volesky said. Were monitoring them and making sure that everything is fine with them. No soldier has been exposed to any Ebola virus, no soldier has been in the presence of any infected person who has Ebola. Under a directive from President Barack Obama, the Pentagon sent about 700 troops, according to The Tennessean, to Liberia to help fight the disease last month. Sixty-five members of the team will staff a military hospital there designed to treat health workers infected with the Ebola virus. The Pentagon plans to ultimately send about 3,000 soldiers to the region. Eighty troops were slated to return to Joint Base Langley–Eustis in southern Virginia on Thursday, where they will be quarantined of 21 days.
