Mandolin? I probably heard my first foot stomping Bluegrass/Country concert in North Carolina . . . but as an Indian Classical Music instrument? I was in my early twenties when I heard Child Prodigy U Srinivas, affectionately called Mandolin Srinivas. You did not have to be well versed in Carnatic Music (South Indian Classical Music) to be captivated by his mastery of this humble instrument. Like the instrument, he was very humble. I felt sad because I thought his dad was a domineering man. Yesterday, Mandolin Srinivas died at the young age of 45 years. May he entertain Angels and Gods with his talent and brilliance. Check out one of his lively pieces in honor of Lord Ganesh. He often started his concerts with this piece. Thanks! Mohan Gopalratnam for letting me know. Dr K youtube/watch?v=uhOc54I1KfU Well-known Indian classical musician Mandolin Srinivas has died in a hospital in the southern city of Chennai after a brief illness. In 1998, the Indian government honoured him with civilian award Padma Shri. Born in Palakol in Andhra Pradesh state in 1969, Mr Srinivas began playing the mandolin at a very young age and gave his first public performance in 1978 at the age of nine. He was the first person to use mandolin in southern Indian Carnatic music and modified the instrument to suit its pitch. bbc/news/world-asia-india-29273642
