Manifesting GOD By Thomas Keating CHAPTER SIX “Jews” and “Greeks” as Metaphors of Spiritual Progress Pp. 42-43 Our false self develops a world-view of our own inventing. The pillars on which it rests are two: the emotional programs for happiness based on the instinctual needs of survival and security, affection and esteem, and power and control--and over-identification with the group to which we belong, whether this be ethnicity, tribe, family, nation, religion, peer group, or gang. Our unwillingness to let go of the support systems that keep our false selves in place is the source of every sin. When circumstances challenge our faith, some people fall apart and start lamenting: Why does God treat me this way? And the disturbing question that plagues all believers of whatever religion begins to arise, namely, If God is sovereign over all things, and I keep serving him as best I can, why doesnt he answer my prayers and take away my endless problems and difficulties? What kind of God is this? These are the people who need signs and wonders to shore up their faith. At some point, however, they will be challenged to grow into a mature faith that does not rely on human props, but on God alone.
