Manny Update: December 20th by Rick Chaboudy Manny had missed his two previous scheduled transports because of technical difficulties. About 3pm on Friday, December 19th, we posted that we needed help getting Manny down to Suncoast Animal League. The response was tremendous and by 4:45pm, Mike and Debbie Valentine had their plane in the air on the way to Alabama to get Manny. We could only hope for a safe and uneventful flight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE FLIGHT The most important part of our wish came true. It was a safe flight, but it was anything but uneventful. First, pilot Mike and co-pilot Debbie had to deal with storms for a good part of their trip. Secondly, they had to battle Mannys high altitude gastrointestinal problems in a mode of transportation that doesnt allow for windows to be rolled down. The storms that stretched from North Florida to the Panhandle and in to Alabama caused the Valentines to fly around the weather. That extra flying time caused the flight to take much longer than expected which meant they would not be able to make it back in time to land at Clearwater Air Park by the airports 11pm closing time. That caused them to make arrangements at Clearwater/St.Pete Airport and re-route their trip. The flight landed safely at 12:02am. Debbie sat in the co-pilots seat with Manny on her lap the entire trip. She strategically placed Mannys rear end facing pilot Mike with hopes of escaping Mannys frequent gas passing manuevers. She would soon find out...there was no escape. As soon as the plane came to a rest, both doors flung open and the human occupants gasped for fresh air. Manny thought it was much ado about nothing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE VET VISIT At 9:20 this morning, Manny had a visit with Dr. Pola at Enterprise Road Animal Hospital. The good news is that Dr. Pola believes Manny only to be about 2-years-old and not the 9 years we were originally told. However, Dr. Pola also believes that Manny has suffered with this demodex mange his entire life. The mange, because it wasnt treated early on in his life, has caused scarring and there is a concern that fur may never grow back in those areas. Also, because of the non-treatment, Manny has very severe secondary infections throughout his body and his feet are extremely swollen. He also has internal parasites. Oh, and lastly, a bebe pellet was found under his skin. Dr. Pola treated both of Mannys ears for infection. Manny is now on three different medications and this will be ongoing for a while. He also needs a special bath three times a week. It will be a long and costly ordeal, but as bad as it is, his prognosis is good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MANNYS HISTORY We have found out that Manny was referred to as a forced surrender because of the neglect. He was scheduled to be euthanized when Rachel found him and pulled him from the shelter. Rachel then contacted Suncoast Animal League. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE OUTPOURING Cynthia Smoot from Ch. 13 called me Friday because she has been following Mannys story. She said she couldnt believe how quickly our followers rally to the the rescue. Rachel, who rescued Manny, stated I am overwhelmed at the outpouring of help for sweet boy Manny. There are people in my community that see what we do every day, that refuse to step up and help; yet there are complete strangers that I will never ever meet, that dont know me, willing to come together for one needy soul...truly unbelievable. I dont know how I can sum it up much better than that. Good people have a way of making good things happen. Rachel who found Manny and Pilot Mike and co-pilot Debbie who brought him to us are prime examples of that. Manny is alive and soon will be healthy. And then hell have a lot of thank you cards to write.
