Mans chief purpose is to live, not to exist—Jack London are the words cast into a low concrete wall just south of The Forum, which is was constructed in 1992 as a memorial to the life of Brian Keith Meilahn. He was in his final year of the Bachelor of Architecture program at KU when he passed away on April 24, 1991. His classmates and friends at KU were determined that Brian’s time in Lawrence should be memorialized, and working with Professor Dan Rockhill, they set about to design and build the wall that has been a place for students to rest since 1992. The London quote came from a poster that hung in Brians room. The memorial wall was one of the first of the many student projects at KU that now is recognized - as Studio 804 - as one of the best design/build programs in the country. Five maple trees were planted in place of the pear tree that was a part of the original memorial landscaping. The Meilahn Memorial is a fitting symbol, not only of Brian’s life, but also the tradition and evolution of student design/build projects at KU. The Memorial was rededicated last Friday. Brians friends and family contributed shared their recollections of his time at KU and his influence on them, as a pupil, fellow student, and library assistant who would open the Hatch Reading Room far into the night to help those in need of study materials.
