Manthy Salcido, who has worked with her son, Zane, since July to clear over 130 properties burned in the Carlton Complex Fires, checks the load of scrap metal before recyclers hauled much of it away last week. The Salcidos, who also lost their home in the fire, worked for three months straight to salvage metal from their own and other people’s property. Zane, then 16, learned that companies were charging fire survivors to haul away their salvageable metal. He talked to his uncles and decided he could do it for free. He’d recoup his expenses by selling it to a recycler, and use any profits he earned to help rebuild his family’s uninsured home. (full story available at wwrld.us/177-tons) Photo/Kristin Wall
